Hoarding disorder is a recognized mental-health condition, and the environments it creates carry genuine risk — to the resident, to responders, and to the structure itself. Beneath accumulated belongings, our teams routinely find a biohazard layer: gross filth, animal or human waste, spoiled food, mold growth, and pest infestation. Blocked exits and overloaded floors add fire and structural danger. For all of these reasons, hoarding cleanup sits at the intersection of compassion and regulated biohazard work, and it should never be approached as a simple haul-away.

Our method is a staged, sorting-based process carried out with the client rather than around them. We begin with a calm planning conversation, then work alongside the resident and family to identify keepsakes, valuables, and important documents before anything is removed. Nothing leaves without agreement except clear biohazards and materials that cannot be salvaged. Where the biohazard layer is present, crews work in appropriate PPE under OSHA protocols and the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), contain the affected zone, and use EPA-registered disinfectants, with regulated waste removed through licensed, EPA-compliant disposal.

Clearing the property is only the first half of the work. Once a space is emptied and decontaminated, we complete a thorough deep clean and deodorization, then inspect for the problems hoarding conditions tend to conceal — water damage, mold, pest activity, and compromised finishes — and remediate them so the home is genuinely safe and livable again. Throughout, we coordinate with the mental-health professionals, social workers, adult protective services, and family attorneys the resident chooses to involve, because a durable outcome depends on the whole support system, not just an empty room.
